Microsoft has officially launched its fourth cloud region in India, located in Hyderabad, significantly expanding its cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure footprint.
The newly established India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad joins Microsoft’s existing cloud data center hubs in Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai, giving the tech giant its largest hyperscale cloud presence in the country. This rollout forms a key part of Microsoft’s $20.5 billion investment commitment dedicated to strengthening India’s cloud capabilities, AI infrastructure, and digital skill-building initiatives.
Key highlights of the new Hyderabad cloud region include:
- AI-Ready Scale: Built with a resilient three-zone architecture designed to support advanced AI workloads from day one as enterprises scale their AI applications from pilots to production.
- Sustainability Focus: The facility utilizes effectively zero water for cooling by relying on air-cooled chillers.
- Compliance and Security: Aligned with MeitY guidelines, India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) framework, and regulations from bodies like the RBI and CERT-In to support sensitive workloads.
- Early Adopters: Major Indian enterprises and critical infrastructure organizations—such as Adani Group, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC Bank, and PB Pay—have already signed up to use the new region.
Microsoft leadership emphasized that India is witnessing a massive surge in data generation—producing roughly 20% of the world’s data while currently holding a smaller fraction of global data center capacity—making this expansion a critical step toward establishing the nation as an AI-first economy and a strategic hub for Asia and the Global South.
