The court also sentenced the defendant’s husband, Somnath Sadhu Sapkal, to three years in prison on charges of abuse.
A Pune district court has sentenced a 45-year-old man to seven years in prison for the attempted murder of his wife, after he allegedly fed her capsules containing razor blades under the guise of giving her medicine.
In the October 23 verdict released on Monday, the court also sentenced the defendant’s husband, Somnath Sadhu Sapkal, to three years in prison for cruelty, with both sentences to run concurrently.
District Judge Aniruddha Subhash Gandhi convicted the accused under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 498A (cruelty by husband or his relatives) of the Indian Penal Code. The court fined him Rs 50,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.
case
The case stemmed from a complaint filed by Sapkar’s wife Jaya. Chaya claimed that her husband gave her capsules containing razor blades in the name of taking medication. The incidents reportedly occurred between October 2023 and November 8, 2023. The Uttam Nagar police registered a case for investigation on November 14, 2023.
Prosecutors stated that in October 2023, the woman began experiencing stomach pain and discovered a razor blade in her stool. A similar incident occurred subsequently. On November 8, she was taken to the hospital due to severe abdominal pain, where doctors performed an endoscopic procedure to remove a razor blade from her stomach.
The prosecution called seven witnesses to testify, including the plaintiff, her son, her attending physician, a pharmacy owner, a witness to the evidence collection process, and an investigator.
Although the plaintiff and her son did not fully support the prosecution’s case during the trial, the court admitted medical evidence, razor blade fragments and capsules seized from the defendant’s residence, and the testimonies of other witnesses.
The judge noted that the court examined the seized items during the proceedings to determine whether the razor blade fragments could fit inside the capsules.
